An LEI is a twenty-character identifier for a legal entity, held in a register the whole world reads. A national registration number applies in one country — an LEI applies everywhere. It belongs to the entity rather than to a bank or a broker, and it follows you wherever you trade.
Several EU regulations require a counterparty to hold a valid LEI before a transaction may be reported.
GLEIF — the foundation that runs the global LEI system — accredits the organisations allowed to issue codes. We are one of them. Most companies selling LEI codes are resellers who pass the order on to an issuer and charge for the extra step.

A registration number is national and applies in one country. An LEI is global and is read by counterparties, banks and supervisory authorities everywhere.
No. The twenty characters are unchanged and the renewal date stays where it is. The only thing that changes is who administers the code.
The code remains and stays published, but it is flagged LAPSED in the global register and reads as out of date to anyone checking it. That is why it is renewed once a year, and each renewal revalidates the details.
Only for trading derivatives, where EMIR requires one. For ordinary securities trading the owner's personal identity number is used.
